I find that it is always nice to know a bit about someone before I start working with them. It helps me to answer the question, "Am I going to enjoy working with this person?". So, here is a bit of information about me to help YOU answer this question!
I was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and moved to Toronto, Ontario with my family when I was a toddler. My dad was a salesman and my mom was a stay-at-home mom. I have one brother. After high school I attended the University of Windsor in Windsor, Ontario, Canada and graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. I took geography and urban studies, but am one of those people who has never actually worked in the profession they went to university for! Instead, for the first few years after graduating, I worked mostly in customer service and office administration for the Canadian Automobile Association in Toronto. I loved this job because it gave me the opportunity to find new ways to help people. I was successful if the person I served walked out of the store with a smile on his or her face.
The last twenty-odd years of my career have been spent working in the non-profit sector for several major recreation and healthcare organizations. Much of my work involved managing volunteers. I taught them new skills, helped them through challenges and obstacles, and celebrated their achievements. It was wonderful seeing each person go on to share what they had learned about themselves and their role in the organization with others.
I have always been a firm believer that dreams can come true. Life often sends us following a path that may not necessarily be the one we were hoping, or planning, to take. This is often due to choices we make to make other people happy. I was no different. But if a dream I had was important enough to me, I never let it die. It may have taken years to be fulfilled and usually involved taking a big leap of faith, but the result was always worth it. The memories I have from my months long trips to Britain and Australia, and from my brief foray into the world of travel and tourism, will always be proof of what I can do, if I believe in myself.
